The wooden heart signed by the band is for an event called “Ofrendas del Corazón”, a night of art, music, and celebration. It is a silent "heart art" auction, which takes place annually during the month of February in the city of Pharr , Texas . All the proceeds from the event benefit the Michael M. Rutledge Legacy Award. Michael Rutledge was a sophomore at PSJA North and participated in the district’s Dual Language bilingual education program. The Legacy Award is given to PSJA Dual Language students who have already been accepted into a college or university upon high school graduation.
For the event, wooden hearts are given out to students, teachers, and anyone interested in participating to decorate as they wish. When returned, the hearts are then sold in a silent auction. The heart has taken a significant meaning for us since Michael, through his parents’ gift of organ donation, was able to give life to four Texas residents.
Former Ofrendas participants include Carlos Mencia, Evanescence, Sandra Cisneros and even Eva Longoria-Parker. This year's list of participants already includes names such as Edward James Olmos, Paul Rodriguez, Denise Chavez, Amado Peña, George Lopez and even the Dallas Cowboys.
Ofrendas del Corazon II will be held on Friday, February 6, 2009. For anyone interested in participating or attending or to obtain more information, email michaelslegacy@yahoo.com or call (956) 884-9776. |
